The classic SEGA video game franchise Shinobi is getting a film adaptation at Universal Pictures. They’re adding director Sam Hargrave to the film with a screenplay from Ken Kobayashi. The game first debuted in 1987 and follows Joe Musashi, a modern-day ninja who confronts evil. The series has spawned 14 games including spinoffs and ports and sold 5 million copies around the globe. There’s a new entry in the series coming that was revealed in 2023.

Marc Platt and Adam Siegel will produce via Mark Platt Productions. Dmitri M. Johnson will produce through Story Kitchen. Toru Nakahara will produce through SEGA. Mike Goldberg is executive producing with Timothy I. Stevenson.

Universal has had success with video game-based movies like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Five Nights At Freddy’s in 2023. They combined for over $1.7 billion at the global box office.

Sam Hargrave comes from the Extraction-franchise at Netflix, having directed both parts to that series. He has films based on Matchbox and another film called Kill Them All coming soon.
