Rudy Mancuso serves as writer/director and star of the coming-of-age love story with a twist, Música. The twist? Rudy has synesthesia which seems to control his life and places it in a constant state of chaos.
So, What is synesthesia? Synesthesia is a neurological condition in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway. This means that individuals with synesthesia may experience a blending of senses. Some examples would be seeing colors when they hear music or tasting flavors when they see certain shapes. So, It is a unique phenomenon that varies in its manifestations among individuals.
However, for Rudy, his synesthesia presents like the show, STOMP! All the noises in the world around him turned into a chaotic eruption of “music”. Going into Música I thought the usage of synesthesia to tell a story was a brilliant idea. Especially when the story itself isn’t new. It’s a fascinating condition that doesn’t get a lot of attention. However, as Rudy’s story progresses the use of synesthesia doesn’t. It stays in a basic eruption of chaos and hinders the progression all around. So, instead of being an incredible storytelling tool it just becomes noise.
That said, Rudy Mancuso and Camilla Mendes (Riverdale/Do Revenge) have fantastic chemistry. I loved watching the two of them play off each other throughout the film. I also appreciate that the story doesn’t wrap everything up in a bow in the end. As someone who’s favorite rom-com is My Best Friend’s Wedding I don’t always need a happy ending. Life is ambiguous and I loved the ending to Música.
